CHAPTER SIX

Cameron crossed the street and headed toward his block. In the evening, it wasn’t unusual to see hangers-on loitering on the sidewalk, waiting to get into either the shelter or the brothel upstairs. But tonight the street was eerily devoid of life. As he passed along the front of the Wellington, he heard a voice that sliced through the emptiness and froze the blood in his veins.

“Hey there. Not so fast.” The man’s tone was menacing, and caused Cameron to shiver.

I so don’t fucking need this. Cameron’s shoulders and neck tensed as he sped up, his long legs striding quickly toward the front door…

“I said, wait up!”

The man barreled into Cameron’s chest, knocking him back against the wall. His head slammed into the bricks but he remained upright, still clutching the bag holding his dinner. He told himself not to panic, but his anxiety spiked anyway, shooting nervous energy through him and making his breathing shallow and his chest constricted. Before he could formulate a plan of escape, the man reached for his head. Caught by the hair, he yelped as the unknown assailant yanked hard, pulling Cameron closer.

“How much?” the man demanded. “How much do you charge?”

The putrid whiskey breath made Cameron grimace. Right now, all he wanted was to get away from this bastard. On some instinctual, innate level, he’d recognized the voice as soon as he’d heard it. It was the same stalker, the one who’d followed him practically to his apartment. He’d probably been waiting for him, looking for an opportunity to make Cameron change his mind. Or worse. Whatever he was up to, it wasn’t good.

“Let go of me.”

“Tell me how much for a fuck, pretty boy, or I’ll take you right here.” His hold on Cameron’s hair tightened painfully as he tugged him to his body. His other hand groped Cameron’s groin. He smashed Cameron’s mouth to his and their teeth collided before he shoved his tongue through Cameron’s closed lips and took a taste.

Cameron twisted and swung at his attacker’s sides, but the man didn’t budge. He might have been drunk but he was strong as a Pitbull. Nothing would move the man off of him short of a tow truck. Crying out, he pushed with all his might, using his legs and hip, but he couldn’t shove the guy away. Fatigue and worry settled in his bones. His only option left was to call for help. But who’d venture outside on such a cold evening to rescue his pathetic ass? Nobody that lived at the Wellington.

A growl issued and then his assailant flew off of him, drawn backward into a solid mass. His rescuer threw the man to the ground with a grunt and delivered a punishing blow to the back of his neck. The man let out a whine of pain, then collapsed, immobile.

His savior hovered over the limp form on the sidewalk, and in the dimness of the snow-laden streetlight, Cameron saw the outline of a gun. He also recognized the guy holding it.
